Three Nobel Prizes have already crowned achievements in the field of nanotechnology.
• In 1965, Richard Feynman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics though presented the first address on the subject of nanotechnology in 1959.
• In 1986, the Nobel Prize went to Gerd Binning and Heinrich Rohrer, inventors of the scanning tunnelling microscope for the study of atomic structure in 1981.

Among the distinguished speakers here today, we are greatly privileged to welcome Jean-Marie Lehn, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987, whose work during the previous 20 years gave rise to the concept of molecular and supramolecular chemistry. The boom in nanoscience and nanotechnology these last 50 years has produced a real scientific revolution and totally transformed many industries. The multiple applications in the field of medicine have already gone past the research stage and will be moving into everyday medical practice in the next 5 to 10 years.
At a meeting which took place at the Val-de-Grace hospital on 15 June 2011 attended by representatives from the French Academies of Pharmacy, Technology, Medicine and Dental Surgery under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and the Digital Economy, it was pointed out that by 2009 nanotechnology was being used to manufacture over a thousand products from tennis rackets, sun-creams and tyres to long-haul aircraft.
