This year’s L’Institut Servier dedicated congress to arthrosis fits perfectly into the continuity of aims of the scientific committee. The problem of ageing has occupied an important place in congresses organised in previous years, and in this context
osteoarthritis is a prime model because of its incidence and financial consequences.
It is estimated that almost 10 million patients are suffering from the disease in France, with an annual cost in 2003 of 1.8 billion Euros, amounting to 80% more than in 1993. The estimated cost in 2014 was 3.4 billion Euros. The rise in the economic consequences of arthrosis is clearly linked to increasing life expectancy and the demographic consequences of an ageing population.
Working if possible on risk factors, and there are many of these (genetic, metabolic and traumatic), and addressing overweight and obesity requires a constant and longterm effort. We only need to remember that after the age of 50 years osteoarthritis is the most common diagnosis in patients with mechanical pain, and that losing 5–10% of body weight can reduce the risk of symptomatic knee or hip arthrosis. However, improving both the prevention of osteoarthritis and its treatments does justify increasing clinical and fundamental research into the pathophysiology of the disease.
